The whole story in three moves
1957 → 1999 · A-12 → SR-71 → NASA
Before: the A-12, an aircraft that did not exist
In the late 1950s the CIA needed a successor to the U-2. After a U-2 was shot down over the Soviet Union in May 1960, that changed from want to must. Lockheed's Kelly Johnson drew eleven designs in ten months; the chosen A-12 used a titanium airframe, an immature J58 engine, and flew at Groom Lake. First flight 26 April 1962; first missions over North Vietnam on 31 May 1967 — the CIA's single-seat version went to war before the Air Force's SR-71, and retired before it too.
The SR-71: making the impossible routine
The SR-71 is the two-seat A-12: a 1.5 m longer fuselage for more fuel, plus a reconnaissance systems officer (RSO) running cameras and electronic sensors. It flew faster than missiles and higher than interceptors — and it did so overtly, in US markings, with crews carrying Geneva Convention ID cards so a shoot-down could not be called espionage. From 1968 to 1990 it flew from Okinawa, England and California over Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba, Nicaragua, Libya and the Baltic, averaging about one sortie a week because each one cost dozens of hours of ground work.
After: why the record still belongs to it
Retired in 1990, partly reactivated in 1995, retired for good by the Air Force in 1998, then flown by NASA as a research platform until October 1999. What it left behind was not a replaceable aircraft but a threshold nobody has crossed since: sustained Mach 3 cruise, above 20 km, for 90 minutes, with a human inside. Then, in the autumn of 2026, the story reopened: NASA's administrator showed a Blackbird silhouette, and the last SR-71 ever built — tail 844, on display at Armstrong — turned out to be gone from its spot.

844 is not where it should be
Tail 844 (ex-61-7980 — last built, last flown in 1999) has been absent from its display spot at Armstrong since at least 17 May 2026, per satellite imagery. Aviation Week reported it first, TWZ followed. NASA answered with a non-denial.
Into a hangar, power-on pending
Aviation Week's sources say it went into a hangar for inspection. A former Blackbird engineer tells TWZ that 'power-on testing' — external power, system by system, not an engine run — is weeks away; the J58s are judged unserviceable on inspection and the JP-7 stockpile was discarded around 20 years ago, with a surrogate fuel under discussion. All of it second-hand.
Will it actually fly?
No official word. The hard limits: no J58 production, no JP-7 production, a support ecosystem gone for three decades, and a return-to-flight estimate of US$40–45 million back in the early 2000s. The conservative read: a test bed for a new high-Mach programme, not a return to reconnaissance.

His account to TWZ: not an engine run, but external power onto the airframe to check which systems survive. The J58s are judged unserviceable on inspection, and a surrogate fuel is already being discussed with refineries. The most concrete detail so far — still second-hand; NASA has not confirmed.
